How To Keep Your Dog Safe During The Summer

Every season brings with it new joys and new challenges, and summer is no different. Hot weather, hot sidewalks, dropped food at picnics, it can be a challenge making sure your canine comrade is safe and happy through the hot months. Here are a few tips to help:

Switch It Up:
Dogs don’t sweat the way humans do and it can be easy for them to overheat. If you normally take your dog for a mid-day walk, try moving it to early morning or late evening when it’s cooler.

Stay Off The Sidewalk
Place your hand on a sidewalk for 10 seconds before you go on a walk. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pup. Try to stick to grassy areas and avoid cement/asphalt on hot days, or follow Tip No. 1 and walk in the early morning or late evening.

Stop The Sunburn
Yes, dogs can get a sunburn just like us, especially dogs with naturally thin hair and/or hairless breeds. And just like us, all dogs have vulnerable areas on their bodies like the belly and ears. Provide as much shade as possible for your dog in your yard or on your outings, especially if your pooch likes to sleep on his back.

Mandate to Hydrate
Your pooch can get dehydrated on hot days so make sure fresh water is always available to quench her thirst.

Life Vest
Not all dogs are good swimmers, and even if your pupster is strong in the water, they may just get tuckered out after a few hours of frolicking. If you’re a cottage-goer or will be around the water a lot this summer, you may want to invest in a dog life vest. Helpful Hint: Bright colours will make it easier to spot your dog if you’re in a boating accident.

Be Barbecue Aware
Summertime means more outdoor socializing and that sometimes means easier access to food for our dogs. While your guests might think it’s cute to feed your dog a few treats, be sure they know which foods are safe and are not safe for Fido. Corn on the cob is tasty for humans but it a dog can’t digest the cob which can then cause a blockage.

Hot Cars
Last but not least, please don’t ever leave your dog in a hot car, even for a moment. Heat stroke can develop in minutes.

Enjoy your summer!
