Keep Your Pets Safe This Holiday Season Dec 17, 2018

Keep Your Pets Safe This Holiday Season

'Tis the season to celebrate! Festivities are in full swing but there are a few things that won’t bring joy to the world of your furry friends. Whether you’re hosting a large family gathering or celebrating in a simple way, here are a few tips to ensure your pets stay safe because nothing can ruin holiday cheer faster than an emergency trip to the vet.

Oh, Christmas Tree

How lovely are thy branches! And your pets think so too. Be sure to anchor your tree to prevent it from falling over if your curious cat decides she wants to go for a climb. And never let your pets drink the tree water as it can be a breeding ground for bacteria.

Skip The Tinsel

Shiny tinsel swaying on the tree is sure to catch the eye of your feline friend! Unfortunately, if your kitty eats the tinsel it can lead to nausea, vomiting and even an obstructed digestive tract. Say no to twinkling tinsel, and yes to decorations your cat won’t eat.

The Crate Escape

Whether it’s a quiet room within your house or your dog’s crate, be sure to provide your pets with a safe place they can rest in case the hustle and bustle of the holiday is making them feel stressed.

Say No To Let It Glow

Candles may bring a beautiful ambiance to a room but they can easily be knocked over by your pet causing a fire or your pet being burned. Consider using flameless candles for your holiday displays (and never leave a candle unattended even if you don’t have pets).

Keep The People Food For The People

We all love to give our pets treats but even small amounts of our food can give your dog an upset tummy. Also, be sure to avoid keep your dog away from any food with xylitol, chocolate, or any kind of alcohol.

Deck the Halls with Artificial Plants

Mistletoe, holly, and lilies, are toxic to dogs and cats. Consider decorating with artificial plants or skip them altogether.

Keep Cords Away

Place Christmas lights out of reach on higher branches to reduce the chance of your pet getting burned by lights, tangled, or biting through the cord. Be sure to check your cords on a regular basis for any signs of chewing.

Let’s make this a holly jolly holiday for everyone in your family, including your four-legged friends.

Happy Howl-idays!
